What is it about?

People with borderline personality disorder (BPD) often feel lonely, which has been linked to suicidal thoughts. This study followed 152 individuals with BPD over 21 days to examine how loneliness relates to suicidal thinking from day to day. Findings showed that daily loneliness was associated with suicidal thoughts on the same day and the next. However, the severity of BPD symptoms did not make this link stronger, as originally expected. Overall, the results suggest that loneliness plays a meaningful role in short-term suicide risk among individuals with BPD.

Why is it important?

This workhighlights loneliness as a key short-term risk factor for suicidal thoughts in individuals with BPD. By showing that loneliness can predict suicidal thinking from one day to the next, the study helps identify a potential target for early intervention. Understanding these daily patterns can inform more timely and effective support strategies to reduce suicide risk in people with BPD.
