What is it about?
The papers present new information on the rates and distribution of alcohol use, effects of cultural values and beliefs, significant moderator and mediator variables, and implications of the findings for intervention. The groups examined are Asian Americans, African Americans, Hispanics, nonHispanic Whites, and Native Americans as well as special populations such as youths, college students, immigrants, and farm workers.

Why is it important?
Despite the importance of understanding the problems and issues associated with alcohol use, little is actually known about alcohol consumption among members of ethnic minority or culturally diverse groups. This collection of research and papers adds to our knowledge and provides insights into ways of controlling alcohol use.
Perspectives
I had the benefit of commenting on this outstanding collection of papers that provide new data, overcome ethnic stereotypes, and examine the kinds of alcohol consumption problems that exist among different cultural and ethnic groups. I think this is a valuable contribution to the general public as well as mental health professionals
