What is it about?
Gendered imagery is pervasive on Instagram. Few masculinities researchers, however, have attended to the visual construction of masculine identities. This study used visually informed, critical discursive psychology to examine how masculinities were made visible in photos posted to Instagram.

Why is it important?
Today, much of who we are isn't just said—it's shown. People use social media to construct identities and psychologies in routine and mundane ways. By studying gender where it "lives," we can better understand how contemporary masculinities are visually constructed, and for what effect.
