What is it about?

Evidence of the effect of digital storytelling on mental health was found in 14 full-text articles selected systematically from academic databases. The evidence focused on adults and females and emerged from studies of 10 digital storytelling media interventions. This study classified storytelling into six types, and found the effects were therapeutic, educational, social, and psychological. Storytelling is shown to be more effective on reducing symptoms of depression than other other mental health problems.

Why is it important?

Evidence of the effect of using storytelling as a tool for psychotherapy is still rare. This review is a synthesis of evidence from few studies that have investigated its therapeutic use and discusses five implications for future research on this subject.

Perspectives

The importance of using storytelling to communicate messages intergenerationally is well known universally. However, the medical significance is less known. I think it is remarkable to publicise non-medical alternatives to treating people with mental health needs.
