What is it about?
Heterosexism, minority stress and traditional masculinity ideologies can have a negative impact on gay men and their attachment models. This article explores the integration of Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) and gay affirmative therapy to help heal attachment traumas and improve models of self.

Why is it important?
Acknowledging that gay affirmative therapy is not a stand-alone model of treatment, this article suggests that AEDP offers a model that is easily integrated with affirmative therapy and provides direct interventions and strategies for working with men who identify as gay.
Perspectives
My hope for this article is that it brings attention to the experiences of gay men from an attachment perspective clearly and simply. It is designed to help clinicians deepen their understanding of the impact heterosexism and traditional masculinity ideologies can have on their gay clients and provide clear interventions for helping clients experience secure attachment in therapy.
