Why is it important?

Increase capacity of primary care leads to affordable, high quality care and population health

Perspectives

Rhode Island is one of the first States in the country to implement a multi-payer primary care transformation initiative. RI leadership believes that measuring and increasing the investment in primary care is important to build a strong and robust primary care foundation for our state. Comprehensive primary care is necessary for improved population health. In 2018, Commonwealth Fund cited RI as the top most improved state in the country when measured against 41 indicators of health system performance. Moving forward integrated behavioral health and community health teams will be needed to address social and behavioral health needs of Rhode Islanders.
