What is it about?

66 fathers and 678 mothers of 2- to 5-year-olds in the United States responded to a survey about their parenting strategies and their children’s behaviors. The more fathers and mothers encouraged their children to face challenging or new situations, such as performing in public, the more flexible, curious, and persistent the children were, and the better they tolerated frustration. These links were found even after accounting for other ways parents support their children’s social and emotional growth.

Why is it important?

The parenting strategies in this study are special because they came from research on understanding fathers. The findings suggest that the benefits of these strategies may also happen when mothers use them. The research may help develop new ways to teach parents to support their children’s development, which may help prevent mental health disorders linked to poor self-control.
