What is it about?

We adopted brief interventions to promote more appreciation and less criticism in Hong Kong Chinese parents toward their children and to enhance family well-being.

Why is it important?

Intensive parental engagement interventions can improve family interaction and relationships, but the reach is limited. Preventive interventions are preferred over remedial interventions to mitigate impending problems and to enhance the well-being of individuals and the community. Our findings were the first to show that brief Health Action Process Approach–based workshops on Chinese parents were effective in promoting positive parental behaviors.

Perspectives

In today’s fast-paced societies in which the traditional primacy and centrality of family are jeopardized, identifying clear behavior targets to provide focus for very brief and preventive interventions to strengthen family well-being becomes all the more essential. More community-based participatory studies are needed.
