What is it about?
Preschoolers' patterning competencies are an important aspect of their early mathematical development. In this study, we developed picture books with questions that focus on repeating patterns. We showed that five-year-olds had better ability to extend repeating patterns after being read these picture books in small groups.

Why is it important?
Patterning competencies are an important aspect of young children's early mathematical development, which is in turn an important indicator of later academic achievement and even SES in adulthood. Our findings show how patterning competencies can be effectively stimulated by means of an easy-to-use intervention that can be launched on a large scale.
Perspectives
I was very excited to work together with the Purdue University Science and Stories Collaborative. They have done some amazing work on developing picture books with mathematical content for young children. Materials like these can make a difference for young children all across the world, as they can provide parents, teachers, and other early childhood educators with the necessary support for stimulating young children's mathematical development. I hope this article will inspire others working with young children.
