What is it about?
This article examined the organizational creation and dissolution of the university division, the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin. This work was conducted while the office faced closure due to state politics.

Why is it important?
This research is timely, as the current sociopolitical climate in U.S. higher education has influenced the closure of diversity, equity, and inclusion offices at many universities and colleges. Additionally, this study is unique because it examines the evolution of the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin across its first 20 years, from its founding to the present day.
Perspectives
This publication has had a personal impact on me, as I witnessed firsthand the closure of the division. I believe this article is necessary during a period in which erasure has become a prominent mechanism of control, surveillance, and the suppression of institutional memory.
