What is it about?
This study provides evidence for adolescent adaptations in cognitive flexibility, a form of executive function that supports behavioral change in response to shifting goals. These results highlight the role of caregiving experiences, specifically unpredictability, in cognitive development after early childhood. Interventions that build executive function skills for learning and adaptive socioemotional behavior should consider the timing of developmental stressors and how they may result in both decrements and adaptations.
