What is it about?

A married person's perception of their spouse's levels of compassion and pro-social values explained between 20-33% of their relationship satisfaction. While important everywhere, the explanatory power of compassion and pro-social values varied between 3 US states. It was lowest in Arkansas and highest in Utah and Vermont.

To our knowledge, this article is one of a few providing preliminary evidence for regional and cultural variation in predictors of marital satisfaction. In particular, understanding that compassion and pro-social values are important and that their importance varies between people and places sets the stage for a more context-specific understanding of relationships.
