What is it about?

In this study, we summarise the findings of 28 studies investigating whether mindfulness interventions, such as mindfulness meditation or mindfulness courses, make people more satisfied with their couple relationship. Overall, we find that people are more satisfied with their relationship after a mindfulness intervention, compared to control groups, but we need stronger evidence. We discuss important gaps in our knowledge. We suggest how future studies might help people translate mindfulness from an activity they do by themselves to something they bring into their relationships with others.

Why is it important?

Positive relationships are essential to human health and well-being. There are many studies on the individual benefits of mindfulness interventions, but we know less about how they impact people's relationships. Mindfulness interventions may offer additional ways to understand and improve couple relationships.
