What is it about?

This study followed 854 adolescents with ADHD over the course of a year. Participants who received psychological treatment saw bigger reductions in their ADHD symptoms than participants who did not attend therapy. Therapies taught many different skills to teenagers and their parents, but the most meaningful impact on ADHD symptoms came from learning organization, time management, planning, and parent-teen communication skills. A focus on maintaining prosocial peer interactions also contributed to teen success. Professionals working with adolescents who have ADHD should focus on these skills in treatment.

Why is it important?

Therapists have many choices when treating an adolescent with ADHD. This study zeros in on the key skills that are best positioned to help teenagers with ADHD.

Perspectives

More work still needs to be done to understand how we can get adolescents with ADHD to practice the skills they are taught in therapy. It is likely that parent involvement and using techniques that help teens connect with the material will be critical.
