What is it about?

Groups 4 Health (G4H) gives people the knowledge and skills they need to manage their social group connections and identifications in ways that enhance health and well-being. It is unique in being the only program that targets the identity-belonging link that lies at the heart of loneliness. Like treatment-as-usual (TAU), G4H reduced depression, but it was better than TAU in reducing loneliness and social anxiety.

Why is it important?

There are numerous interventions that target loneliness, with some more effective than others, and many clinical treatments target the symptoms of loneliness (e.g., depression) not the underlying problem (i.e., a lack of belonging). G4H fills this gap. In doing so, it offers both a basis for treatment and prevention for populations at risk of loneliness.

Perspectives

There are many opportunities for social engagement in the community, but many operate in silos making it a landscape that is difficult to navigate for professionals let alone clients. G4H adds value by working with clients to optimise appropriate and sustainable take-up of these resources
