What is it about?

This study examined whether the sights and sounds that accompany wins on online slot machines influence gambling behavior. Enhanced win-related sensory feedback led participants to play more quickly, but did not increase how much they bet or how much they reported being immersed in and enjoying the game. The findings suggest that sensory features of slot machine gambling may encourage faster play, potentially increasing the number of bets made during a gambling session.

Why is it important?

Design of gambling products may influence behavior even when people do not consciously report experiencing the game differently. In particular, faster play means people can place more bets in the same amount of time, which could increase exposure to financial losses and other gambling-related harms. This has implications for how online gambling products are designed and regulated, particularly as gambling increasingly incorporates sophisticated audiovisual features.

Perspectives

My hope is that this article highlights the potential role of gambling product design in contributing to gambling-related harm. I also hope it encourages further research into how specific design features influence gambling behavior, as well as greater consideration and scrutiny of these features by regulators.
