What is it about?

Do dfferent people react similarly to the same music, showing similar emotional reactions? Or do the emotions differ? If they differ, which are the psychological factors that can explain these differences? For example, is it personality factors? Or mood states? Or musical expertise? Previous work has typically looked at one of these factors. The current work takes an integrative look at them, and compares their relative importance.

Why is it important?

Because the same music that enraptures one individual, might bore or irritate another, understanding the psychological attributes that tip the balance towards one or the other reaction have applications ranging from music therapy to the generation of personalized playlists.

Perspectives

The work represents a step towards a more complete understanding of factors involved in musical emotion induction. Having clarified the role of listener features in musical emotion induction, our current work looks at the role of performance features in musical emotion induction (e.g., expressive vs. bland performances of the same music) and their importance relative to listener features.
