What is it about?

The aim of this study was to examine characteristics and consequences associated with victim retraction and participation in police investigations of IPV cases. We also examined the characteristics and consequences for those victims who withdrew their co-operation.

Why is it important?

The results of this study can facilitate the understanding of why some victims participate in the police investigation, and the suggested risk management strategies, whereas other victims do not. We also examined the consequences associated with co-operation/withdrawal in terms of re-victimization as well as legal consequences (i.e. rates of prosecution and convictions) for the perpetrator.

Perspectives

Leaving an abusive relationship is a process rather an a one-off event. Thus, professionals working with victims of IPV need to have patience and understanding in their approach towards victims. It is also important to note that a criminal justice proceeding may not be what all victims want.
