What is it about?

My research identifies interaction style as the key mechanism through which AI systems influence human cognition. Variations in agency, execution, and override lead to measurable differences in confidence and cognitive engagement. The research provides a framework for designing AI systems that preserve or enhance executive function by structuring these interaction patterns intentionally.

Why is it important?

In a time when GenerativeAI utilization has become ubiquitous, it is imperative that we rely on empirical research to demonstrate the potential cognitive attenuation or in some cases positive cognitive amplification of tool usage. This research demonstrated a powerful insight - that chosen interaction style with AI is the greatest determinant of cognition outcomes.

Perspectives

Generative AI turns 60 in 2026, the moral panic we are seeing around the tool also manifested with the telephone, internet, and even the automobile. Autonomy and personal agency with the Human-AI relationship will be imperative to leveraging GenAI usage for cognitive capacity upgrades.
