What is it about?

Although unhealthy alcohol use is common among U.S. Veterans, only a minority receive alcohol-related care. The treatment gap is likely due to a shortage in alcohol-related care and barriers to utilizing services. Mobile apps have potential to address barriers and increase treatment receipt. We examined U.S. Veterans’ experiences with Step Away, an app to reduce alcohol-related risks, to identify factors that may influence engagement.

Why is it important?

Few studies have qualitatively assessed users’ experiences with mobile apps to manage alcohol use. The current study reports on the qualitative aim of a parent mixed-methods feasibility study that used quantitative and qualitative methods. We conducted interviews to evaluate U.S. Veterans' experience and satisfaction with Step Away. Findings from this study will inform subsequent versions of the app under study, as well as veteran-specific versions of the app; these findings also may be broadly applicable to other healthcare-related apps.
