What is it about?

How does experiencing disability discrimination impact the mental health of people with disabilities? We find that discrimination leads to worse depression and anxiety among a large sample of people with physical disabilities in the United States. People with temporary disabilities are more strongly impacted by discrimination, which has important implications for helping people adapt to temporary disabilities.

Why is it important?

We offer the first evidence for negative mental health effects of experiencing disability discrimination in the United States. We also use a useful statistical technique that lets us determine if people are more likely to experience depression and anxiety, as well as how many symptoms of depression and anxiety they experience.
