What is it about?

Families not having enough food is a continuous problem in the United States. For Latinx adolescents specifically, the stress of not having enough to eat can be complicated by feeling the need to support your family. This can also lead to a sense of role overload, or the feeling that you do not have enough time or energy to take care of all your responsibilities. All these factors can result in poor mental health, hence why it is important to address the issue of food insecurity.

Why is it important?

We analyze data from Latinx adolescents living in rural areas, which is a subpopulation in the US that is greatly understudied. Also, our findings show that food insecurity does impact the well-being of Latinx adolescents and that familism may not always be a protective factor.

Perspectives

Writing this article was a great experience as it allowed me to collaborate with co-authors with whom I've established incredibly strong relationships with, both professionally and personally. It has been well-received by students and academics alike, as it brings a fresh perspective to how the cultural value of familism impacts rural Latinx adolescents and shines a light on a continuous issue in the United States.
