What is it about?

We know that mind/body approaches can cure chronic pain for many people. In this study, we outline who the approach worked for and why, while also noting characteristics of people for whom it did not work.

Why is it important?

Understanding the conditions that lead to healing can help boost the efficacy of mind/body approaches and help providers and patients more effectively prepare for and engage in mind/body treatments.

Perspectives

I have been successfully treating people with chronic pain for years, but this was my first opportunity to systematically research the characteristics and perspectives of patients for whom the approach worked, as well as identifying and understanding patients for whom it did not work. These results are important in not only allowing us to better identify patients most amenable to the intervention, but also adjusting and improving the intervention to increase the efficacy for all patients.
