What is it about?

Mindfulness Training for Primary Care is an 8-week group program that helps people develop skills and motivation to reflect and act on what it means personally to live well in life, especially during difficult experiences. MTPC is a "warm mindfulness" intervention that includes mindfulness and self-kindness meditations, writing exercises, movement, sharing, and discovering a compassionate path to making changes in behavior. MTPC helps participants to regulate their emotions and feelings, to recognize how we all go through struggles sometimes, and offers many paths to discovering a more trusting relationship with the body and mind.

Why is it important?

Changing our habits can be really difficult and often involves finding new ways to relate to our thoughts, emotions, and/or body. At a time when many people are feeling a lot of difficult emotions, MTPC offers a gradual mind and body training that helps people make changes through awareness and compassionate action. MTPC is backed by research in a primary care setting where many types of people receive care.

Perspectives

A lot of mindfulness programs emphasize awareness and acceptance but don't explicitly teach practices of kindness or self-compassion that may support the process of acceptance. MTPC combines mindful awareness with self-compassion and kindness to guide people to pay attention to and eventually make changes in health behaviors.
