What is it about?

This paper describes the findings of a survey asking pediatricians about how often they encounter patients with mental and behavioral health concerns and how comfortable they are managing these patients' care. They see patients with these concerns very frequently. Pediatricians are more comfortable managing patients were certain conditions compared to other types of concerns. In order to better serve their patients, the pediatric workforce needs additional support.

Why is it important?

There are increasing needs among children and youth for support around behavioral and mental health care and there are few specialists who serve this population, particularly in rural areas. There is a need for training and support to help primary care pediatricians to care for the less complex cases to allow for the most complex cases to be better able to access specialty care.

Perspectives

This article highlights a pediatric mental health care access program. This type of program is one strategy to help pediatricians build their knowledge and their patients access the care they need.
