What is it about?
Many educators assume that providing students choice in writing is important. However, we found that it was important when students got to choose their argumentative position because having choice increased students' feelings of competence related to the writing activity.

Why is it important?
Our findings show that providing choice enhances students' feelings of competence in the writing activity. Furthermore, their perceived competence can carry over to future writing activities, resulting in better writing on future writing assignments.
