What is it about?

Children's understanding of their own and others' emotions develop in interaction with the people around them. We know that parents are important, and in this study we also show that the relationship children have with their teachers in preschool and in school is important for their development of emotion understanding over time.

Why is it important?

The study shows the important role of teachers and suggests that interventions to support emotional socialization should include not only parents but also teachers.

Perspectives

It has been a privilege to be part of the Trondheim Early Secure Study (TESS), which enables a greater understanding of children's development. I have enjoyed the close collaboration with the co-authors and hope that our findings will motivate further research on teachers' role for emotional development.
