What is it about?

Most students in higher education will use a digital textbook in some of their courses. Compared to print textbooks, digital textbooks have more opportunities to be developed in accordance with how people learn. When instructors and students understand how digital textbooks are designed and meant to be used, students can experience significant improvements in learning. This paper provides practical advice for both students and instructors regarding how to interact with digital textbooks.

Why is it important?

More and more textbooks are being developed in the digital environment. Students using digital textbooks can benefit from understanding how they are developed and how they are meant to be used to maximize learning.

Perspectives

This paper is the culmination of a decade of my work in the scholarship of teaching and learning. I have a unique perspective to bring as a college instructor, scholarship of teaching and learning researcher, and psychology digital textbook author. My intention in writing this paper was to help instructors understand how digital textbooks can support course design principles and to help students understand how to best use digital textbooks to improve their learning and retention of material.
