What is it about?

We develop and synthesize conceptual analyses, case study analyses, and practical thoughts on the application of convergence science in Arctic change studies. The paper describes the process we developed to converge multiple disciplines and regional stakeholders and provides three examples of research threads and emerging questions that came out of the process.

Why is it important?

The Arctic is experiencing the effects of twin pressures of rapid climate change and industrialization. The urgency of such changes demands a convergence science paradigm for scientific inquiry. Such an approach can serve as a model for others interested in rapidly changing life worlds.

Perspectives

Collaborating in this project and in writing this article was a great pleasure, having worked with this network for several years. Incorporating lenses of earth system scientists, ecologists, and anthropologists, we have all learned a lot from each other and developed a common language for understanding the linkages between system elements in the context of rapid change.
