What is it about?

This study examines two flavonoid‑rich extracts obtained from bergamot peels and their effects on human endothelial cells exposed to the inflammatory cytokine TNF‑α. Using an in vitro model (HUVECs), the authors assessed oxidative stress markers, antioxidant defenses, and NF‑κB activation. The extracts showed antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory properties without detectable genotoxicity.

Why is it important?

Endothelial dysfunction is closely linked to inflammation and oxidative stress. The findings suggest that bergamot peel—an industrial by‑product—contains bioactive flavonoids able to modulate oxidative balance and inflammatory signaling in endothelial cells, supporting interest in citrus‑derived phytocomplexes for nutraceutical or functional food applications.

Perspectives

The results are based on an in vitro endothelial model and cannot be directly extrapolated to clinical outcomes. Future studies should address bioavailability, molecular targets in more complex systems, and validation in in vivo models to better define physiological relevance.
