What is it about?

This is a review of a 2008/2016 book which asks the question. What is a musician? The volume looks at the characteristics of work for musicians and contrasts this with post-secondary education.

Why is it important?

The term musician is often conflated with performer. In reality, musicians are professionals who work in a number of specialist areas. This has implications for initial and ongoing education and training, policy making and identity work.

Perspectives

I am keen to see challenges to the hierarchy of success which celebrates performers and creators and largely ignores the other work of musicians.
