What is it about?

This is the first of two articles published in anticipation of the 6-volume Cultural History of Theatre. In this essay, the project's General Editors examine major intersections between theatre and the field of cultural history and the impact of the cultural turn on conceptualizations of theatre history.

Why is it important?

Theatre is a realm of culture and in many cases a major factor in the formation of cultural identifies. Despite this, the directly attributed effects of cultural history--as distinct form social history--have been under-rated by theatre scholars. This is a major overview of the historiography of theatre in and of the cultural realm.
