What is it about?

Cross wind direction and its velocity are the most important factors to determine optimum runway orientation. In this study, a new method and its interface are developed to find optimum runway directions for landing aircraft.

Why is it important?

The "Wind Rose" method developed by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is used for optimisation of runway orientations in all over the world. in some conditions, the accuracy of this technic may decrease because of the assumptions considered in the calculations. The proposed model eliminates all assumptions which cause a decrease in accuracy and give best solutions in all conditions.

Perspectives

Most of the researhers working on optimisation of runway orientation tried to reduce the error sources arising from the assumptions considered in Wind Rose Method. The model developed shows that the appropriate runway directions can be found accurately by a different approach without any assumption.
