What is it about?

This research investigates the use of question tags by Cameroonians. By comparing the type of question tags actually used by Cameroonians with what is taught in school, we have been able to show that there is a huge discrepancy between the two. Although the actual use of question tags reveals the nativisation process in Cameroon English, school programmes still focus on an RP standards which is seldom use in real life.

Why is it important?

This work raises the important questions of "how English is taught", "what standard of English should be taught", and "why English should be taught" in education in Cameroon.

Perspectives

This work is not aimed as a critique of the way Cameroonians speak English; rather it questions this contradiction that even teachers display when they teach their students English forms which they themselves hardly use. As a lecturer, this has been a personal introspection for me too.
