What is it about?
When bearings are used in several applications they are subjected to various and often high loading. This loading overtime results in initiating sub surface changes which are in the form of white etching bands.

Why is it important?
Bearings are extremely important components in terms of transmission of motion in several industrial applications such as machines, aerospace, automobile, turbines and generators. Therefore enhanced service life and durability of bearings in turn contribute to reliability of these equipment and systems and also reduce energy dissipation through interacting losses.
Perspectives
Significant efforts and hard work have gone into experimental and analytical work to develop this article. This research has been conducted among University and Industry partners and provides an example of academic-professional collaboration to develop design solutions which have contributed to new knowledge and will bring significant societal, economic and environmental benefits.
