What is it about?

This review article on endothelial cell (EC) models as an important tool in biomaterials research critically examines, among other things, unrealistic experimental set-ups and far too far-reaching conclusions from the results obtained. The question is discussed whether this might be a reason why only a few of the large number of potential biomaterials have found their way into the clinics. As a contribution to this debate, established EC models and possible selection criteria for choosing the most reliable model are discussed.
