What is it about?

This is one of the very interesting papers on Biofilms. Mr. Katsuhiko Sano is the main author. They devised a composite coating based on silane. Silver, copper and other nanopowders dispersed in the coating. By Raman Spectroscopy and FIB-SEM, he could confirm biofilms and also the control effects of the coating against biofilm formation.

Why is it important?

The three points are important. They are Mr. Sano's findings. #1: Raman spectroscopy carried out the deposition on the surface of specimens. #2; Cross section of coating and biofilm were observed FIB-SEM successfully #3: The elemental distribution showed us that deposition on the ​surface is biofilm. The coating is now sold by Mr. Katsuhiko's company (D & D corporation).

Perspectives

I am one of his coauthors and have perspectives for this papers as follows. #1: He and his colleagues found that silane is the best substrate among composite coatings against fouling. #2: The other dispersion agents could be used for many other purposes. #3: They showed that Raman spectroscopy, FTIR-ATR, ​and FIB-SEM will be powerful tools for evaluation of biofilms.
