What is it about?

This paper analyses three different ways of measuring financial vulnerability in sports clubs. It uses golf and football clubs to define the 'best' method - that clubs that make a loss over four years are financially vulnerable. It also suggests ways to improve clubs' financial situation.

Why is it important?

Almost half of sports clubs analysed were financially vulnerable. This means they could disappear from the communities in which they exist, if no intervention is planned. Developing better financial health is important if clubs are to survive and thrive.

Perspectives

This analysis is unique in two ways - first it is in the sports sector, where financial vulnerability has not been discussed very often andits attributes are ill-defined. Second, it analyses New Zealand sports clubs (golf and football) to find out about grass-roots (amateur) clubs' financial positions.
