What is it about?

Epitaxial quantum dots don't need to be structurally asymmetric to have non-degenerate electron wavefunctions. The role of piezoelectricity is enough to reveal a splitting of 5-7meV in the p-states of the electrons.

Why is it important?

There was much interest in 2005 is reducing the degeneracy of excited state of excitons in quantum dots, to create entanglement for quantum information processing. Revealing that there was a hard limit due to piezoelectricity highlighted a further challenge to overcome in the realization of quantum entanglement.

Perspectives

It was a nice little piece of work that stimulated discussion on the nature and extent of piezolectric fields in zincblende semiconductors, later leading to the non linear models.
