What is it about?
A model is developed for the mechanical behavior of and water uptake by thermo- and pH-sensitive gels. The effects of temperature, pH, and molar fraction of anionic monomers on degree of swelling is shown.

Why is it important?
This model is a great tool to understand and predict the behavior of stimuli responsive hydrogels
Perspectives
These materials have recently become a focus of attention as they demonstrate potential for “smart” applications including biomedical devices, drug delivery carriers, scaffolds for tissue engineering, filters and membranes for selective diffusion, sensors for on-line process monitoring and artificial muscles
