What is it about?

- We did an European expert survey about wind energy resistance. - Resistance relates to planning quality in four supra-national European regions. - Landscape encroachment is a major reason for resistance in most European regions. - Lack of social justice ranks high in East- and South-Europe. - Comprehensive strategic planning potentially reduces problems with resistance.

Why is it important?

Wind energy is one of the most controversial renewable energy types, possibly due to the multiple related public concerns. Although some European country-comparisons exist, research concerning acceptance factors in different political and cultural planning contexts is scarce, especially in Eastern and Southern Europe. We provide a general overview of acceptance problems in Europe and their relationship to participatory processes and practices. An overall conclusion is that planners and decision-makers need to be more aware about the diversity of acceptance issues, which would allow them to design more appropriate strategic and local planning processes.

Perspectives

I hope our paper adds to social aspects of renewable energy studies, by highlighting that participation in strategic planning also matters to acceptance (in addition to participation in local planning).
