What is it about?

We found that young children learn the spelling and meaning of new words more easily if they first read those words correctly. However, it is possible for young children to learn new words even if they cannot read those words correctly.

Why is it important?

Reading is an experience through which children can learn tons of new words, so understanding what criteria are needed for this learning to occur is crucial to help children develop their word knowledge.

Perspectives

This follows similar work I did with older children. Finding that children who are just beginning to read can learn so much from reading was quite fascinating to me.
