What is it about?
In our latest publication, we investigated the three-dimensional wake dynamics generated by a turbulent circular jet normally impinging on baseline, vertical-slit, and horizontal-slit circular cylinders using time-resolved particle image velocimetry (TR-PIV) in two orthogonal planes. Our main findings demonstrate that slit orientation acts as a dominant parameter governing wake development through passive momentum injection: the vertical slit introduces additional streamwise momentum into the near wake that suppresses shear-layer instability, reduces turbulent transport, and promotes rapid wake recovery with a predominantly single-mode frequency response. In contrast, the horizontal slit induces a passive blowing-suction interaction that enhances lateral and spanwise momentum redistribution, leading to complex three-dimensional mixing, quasi-periodic oscillations from multiple energetic modes, and substantially lower Strouhal numbers than canonical cylinder wakes due to continuous jet-induced momentum forcing.

Why is it important?
Jet impingement onto circular cylinders is motivated by applications in thermal management, surface cooling, and flow control.
Perspectives
Future experiments combining time-resolved pressure measurements within the cavity with velocity measurements through the slit would be required to quantify this potential coupling and its influence on frequency selection.
