Why is it important?
All eight girls had been bullied, mostly physically and verbally. The bullying caused embarrassment, tears, anger, nervousness, withdrawal and a preference for friends who also had a disability. The students suggested building respect among their peers and called on administrators, teachers, counsellors and parents to play an active role, offering important lessons for making inclusive schools safe.
Perspectives
Listening directly to students with intellectual disability was at the heart of this study. I hope their words encourage schools to act so that inclusive education is also safe and respectful for every student.
