What is it about?

Pterygium is a wing shape fibrotic tissue that grows on the surface of the eye. This is related to abnormal fibroblasts which secrete excessive matrix containing elastin and other proteins. Here, we use the -omics approach to evaluate differentially secreted proteins from pterygium fibroblasts compared to the same eye conjunctival fibroblasts.

Why is it important?

Apart from the influence of sunlight, the exact pathogenesis of pterygium remains unknown.

Perspectives

There is no effective treatment in pterygium apart from surgical excision.
