What is it about?

We use digital maps to explore how ferry routes can switch to electric boats. Our method helps decide where charging stations are needed and which routes work best, supporting cleaner transport for island regions.

Why is it important?

Our work uniquely shows how digital maps and real-world route data can be combined to rethink ferry networks for the electric era. This approach reveals where electrification can succeed and what infrastructure is needed, offering insights that can shape future low-emission maritime planning.

Perspectives

What motivated me most while writing this article was the opportunity to contribute to a future of cleaner island transport. Electrification in maritime networks is a complex challenge, but I believe our work shows that solutions are within reach when technology, data, and thoughtful planning come together. My hope is that this publication encourages further innovation in sustainable maritime transport.
