What is it about?
Standardized hospital mortality has been used for many years to detect potential instances of poor care. These models do have their limitations and simple changes in admissions due to altered health care configuration can generate unexplained changes in the mortality scores. A simple chart can be used to look at the trend in the mortality score.

Why is it important?
Hospital boards can often react to increasing hospital mortality scores, however, it is wise to see what else may be impacting on the score before reacting.
Perspectives
Some healthcare models are better than others, and all models contain hidden assumptions. This is part of a longer series, see http://www.hcaf.biz/2010/Publications_Full.pdf
