What is it about?
Extended periods of higher deaths and medical admissions have occurred for many years but have not been recognized as a unique phenomenon. In the UK policy-based evidence may have acted to hinder the investigation of these curious events.

Why is it important?
These events are the single most important contribution to rising emergency admissions. Current strategies to address rising emergency admissions totally ignore the contribution from these events and are therefore likely to fail. Other have tried to blame government austerity on the higher deaths arising from a recent series of these events.
