What is it about?

We measure the level of tear cytokines in a sample of Singapore adults above 40 years old.

Why is it important?

Cytokines regulate inflammation and many diseases in the ocular surface. However, most reports in the literature concern clinic or hospital patients, which already or are likely to have many risk factors for ocular surface disease, assessment of tear cytokines in the general population is more unbiased.

Perspectives

Since there is a wide range of cytokine concentrations in healthy individuals (especially between different ages), it is harder to use these for screening purposes. However, the cytokines may still be valuable for monitoring of treatment-induced changes.
