What is it about?

We show evidence that the popularity of urban farming in Finland is driven by an interest in revitalizing the city, developing a sense of community, and increasing awareness about the value of food.

Why is it important?

From a practical perspective (for house builders and residents/ tenants), we show which are the key suitability issues, benefits, and obstacles to the co-creation of urban agriculture in residential areas with housing companies. The results indicate that flexible module-based planning and availability of key site actors and factors (access to information and irrigation) is key to reap benefits like building social capital stock through urban farming.

Perspectives

Information provision and information sharing is key for successful co-creation efforts between residents and house developers for growing urban farming and associated social capital stock.
